Gause Boats

Gause Boats

Gause Built Custom Boats was established and production of a 26 foot custom fishing boat designed to float and run in less than a foot of water was begun. The boat was built with a tower, for better fishing visibility, a hull shape designed to promote a smooth, dry ride, a bait well integrated into the transom of the boat and many more features which the Gause Family had come to expect after many generations of fishing and using boats. Each and every boat was built for a particular client and the details of each build were decided with the client in order to create the “perfect” custom fishing boat for that particular client.

Destruction and Creation

Sometimes the treasure hunt of creating something from salvaged materials is half the fun.  Okay,  Okay. Ill admit it, more than half the fun.  Ive been making art out of bullshit found in junkpiles and on dump runs for more than a decade.

But when you want to create a barn or a shed or a shantyboat out of old barn wood and rusty sheet metal, you got to do some searching.  If you live in a less-than-rural area, good luck.  On my country drives, the amount of rusty weathered junk in the yard of every farm we pass sets me drooling.  To find materials I have to get more creative.

This weekend we went out to the deep country of Hollister (made famous by Marlon Brando in The Wild One) to tear down an old chicken coop.  It was beautiful.  Beautiful country, beautiful weather, and beautiful 80 year old redwood lumber and rusty sheet metal.

Salvaging a building, involves deconstructing a building in the reverse order it was constructed.  We remove the shingles, then the roof battens, then the roof beams, and so on.  It is an interesting way to understand how a building is constructed.

The chicken coop featured "single wall" construction.  That is, no stud framing, just siding that holds up the roof.  When we were done, we had a huge pile of beautiful old redwood 1x12s and a handful of redwood beams.  It was rough-cut "dimensional lumber," meaning a 2x4 actually measures 2 inches by 4 inches.

Jen and Kai helped disassemble the chicken coop, and then Alex helped disassemble a nearby outhouse the next weekend.  This lumber will be used to construct the cabin on our shantyboat.  The corrugated metal will form the roofs over the cabin and porches.

Walking out into the nearby fields we found an old shack with gorgeous peeling paint patterns.  Hard not to joink this door as our shantyboat door.

I get hot just looking at old weathered textures.  In some ways, for better or worse, it is my love of this aesthetic which guides a lot of the decisions about the shantyboat.

Design 358 24 Sloop

Although its a shame we dont have any images of this boat, we are thankful to have the plan set. Designed in our Boston office by the hand of K. Aage Nielsen, she is a beauty. Give me this boat, some provisions and a months vacation and I would be very happy.

Built by Malcolm Brewer of East Boothbay, Maine, she was launched in 1940. Its uncanny how similar she is to design #160, Baltica but on a smaller scale. Simply chop the deckhouse off a few frames forward of the companionway hatch garage and shrink the hull and there you have it. And the boat has the same elegant feature that can be seen on the image of Baltica (zoom in for a better view), the coaming that surrounds the mast and is used as a halyard bin. Its a wonderful (and useful) styling element.

Here is the construction & general arrangement plan.

Caravelle A 14 1 2 foot rowing skiff after the Echo Bay Dory Skiff

/

Well, Spring is springing here on the Maine Coast so it is time to start unveiling some new designs at Clint Chase Boatbuilder. The pictures are of a scale model of a new skiff design by Eric Risch. We have been collaborating for years on the Echo Bay Dory Skiff and when a couple on Marthas Vineyard said, "We want a bigger version of the Echo Bay", I went to Eric and said, "We have a project!". This is the result of a redrawing of his old design, Caravelle. The result will be a stable but slippery rowing skiff with a transom that well clears the water, an immersed stem to prevent slapping/pounding in harbor chop, and space for two to row with their dog. Moreover, shell weight 90 pounds and be easily cartopped with a custom canvas cartopping cover. We plan to start construction on two skiffs May 1 and launch after July 4th.

More to come about Caravelle and the Echo Bay DOry Skiff Kit packages.

Life Lessons John

One of the great things about getting old (okay, one of the few great things) is that you finally realize your parents werent as dumb as you thought they were. That they actually might know more than you do about certain things. Not all things, but some things.

Young people are so focused on making their own way that they tend to rebuff advice, so gradually older people learn to pick their battles. As a result, when an older person does speak up its probably a good clue youre doing something wrong. Not to say stupid.

So when Bob, the former owner of the Blue Moon, took time to write me, I listened. 85 (I think?) years young, expert sailor, owner of numerous wooden boats... yes, I listened...

I just read your latest blog and I enjoyed it.  But, I am wondering if you are not putting a lot of unnecessary strain on yourself and your wife. It is obvious that you are a master of problem solving so far as the mechanical operation of your boat and your mind works in a methodical way that not all minds work.

You think that every one should enjoy how things work and and understand why... but in fact they should just enjoy being on the water and in the sunshine and the silent movement of the boat, done by the forces of nature.  I fear that you have spent too much time in trying to make Helena a "Seaman" and not enough time in letting her enjoy the experience of the boat.

I would suggest that you determine what Helena either dislikes, or is afraid of, and pursue a different course of instruction.

I hope that I am not out of order in giving you my thoughts and suggestions I only want you and Helena to get the most enjoyment from the boat.

Best regards: Bob

As my daughter used to say, Snap!

But I knew he was right, so I immediately took his suggestions to heart and began talking to Helena, trying to figure out what she wanted to get out of sailing. What she liked and didnt like. I tried to do this in a subtle way (well, as subtle as a man can be with a wife that can see straight through him), and then tried to implement the plan.

The result: a happy wife, which means a happy sailor.

Im sure Helena will gradually pick up the details of sailing as we go along -- the same way I did when I was a kid. No one ever tried to teach me sailing. I just gradually absorbed it from my Uncle Marty and my father, and from having my own boats, from that 14 ODay Widgeon on Burden Lake, to the Blue Moon.

Widgeon -- a great little boat
But in the meantime, Im going to order up a whole lot of summer nights and blue moons. With some sardines and crisp white wine for good measure.

Who says you cant teach an old sea dog new tricks?

Trust the Captain (Helena)

For some reason or another, my sailing lessons suddenly stopped.  Yes, we were busy. Parents visiting, children coming back from college, summer engagements and parties.

Nevertheless, in the back of my mind, I was expecting that the next lesson would come along and soon.  Maybe this weekend, maybe Monday since I didn’t have any students, maybe on the next sunny Sunday morning... but somehow it didn’t happened.

What happened were new friends, sailing friends, and something else...

Belonging to a sailing club necessarily means talking, dreaming, and meeting people that are fond of sailing.  I was not reluctant to meet all those people but rather out of my comfort zone, so I probably seemed like a snob of some kind, not participating or having much to say.  In reality, I just didn’t know what to say.  The sailing lessons were one way I expected to have something to discuss with other sailor’s wives, but they all seem so sea-worthy and again I was lost about how to bond.  Luckily there are ladies in the club who enjoy gardening and cooking and we had a great time talking about that, but I am still longing to belong as a mate, if you know what I mean.

Then Steve and Debbie came into our lives.  John and Steve hit right away and off they went sailing, fixing things (very complicated things), exchanging tools and tips on how to make the best dingy, what are the best ropes (sorry, lines) for the job and agreeing on what beer tastes better on a nice summer evening.

Debbie and I were acquaintances. The only thing we had in common at that time was that we both had sailor husbands.  Then came the invitation for a sail on their boat.  Wow, I was so excited and at the same time nervous.  John is a great sailor. Norwegian Steve, also a seasoned sailor, is a descendant of the famous boat designer, Colin Archer, and Debby has been sailing with Steve for eons and from what I hear, she is pretty good sailor herself.

We met on the dock for a sunset sail.  Nice boat! Once permission to come aboard was granted, I settled my insecurities.  There is no way one can be nervous with such a pleasant company.  John steered the boat, Steve did whatever was needed to get sails up, Debby offered great conversation, cushions, snacks, beer and wine.  I sat and watched the perfectly synchronized activity.  We didn’t get back on the dock until late that night.

Then it was our time to reciprocate, and now I am nervous: our boat is so much smaller, we don’t have sink, kitchen, table, life-lines. Our head is in what John likes to call the focsle (that means half-hidden behind the mast, not behind a door.) I was nervous because if the boat heels too much, water gushes in the scuppers, and your bottom gets all wet no matter how thick the cushion you are sitting on.

I rigged a curtain to make the head more private and we sailed that evening.

As a hostess, I felt I should do what I can to make this sailing expedition smooth, undo the sail covers, get ready to raise the one sail I know how to, tie this and that line to where it goes, offer drinks and snacks to my guests.

What happened was unexpected. While we were motoring out into the Huntington Bay, Debbie uncorked the wine, Steve took over the steering, John took care of the sails, and by the time we got to the light house, we all had our favorite beverages in our hands, the motor was off, the sails raised and puffed, all the lines tied up where they should be, the ropes and covers folded and stored.  Meanwhile, all I did was smile.

We were sailing beautifully, and I didn’t have not even a little bubble of sweat popping and no adrenaline rush. It was a new and undiscovered pleasure to be sailing on my boat just for fun.

Now we are in the harbor, the wind is perfect; not too much, not too little. No water gushing into the scuppers.  A beautiful big yellow blue moon rose behind the hills of Northport.  The cool evening air had a hint of soon approaching fall. We all looked in awe of that beautiful sight.  Our silence and the beauty of that moment was (I cannot think of any other better word) adorned by a light breeze on the sails and the water being gently sliced by our Blue Moon.  We were speechless.

A real blue moon
We toasted to the blue moon and to the Blue Moon.  Conversation was entertaining, we were laughing, bonding, telling stories and snacking in norwegian style, sardines, smoked salmon, hard boiled egg, black bread and wine, mmmm.  We didn’t head back until very late that night.

Back at the dock, I realized that this was the most important lesson I had all summer.  It wasn’t about how to sail, it was about the feeling of sailing.

Although John has been (trying to) tell me something all along, I wasn’t listening. I was fretting, worrying and sweating.  I was so wrapped up in memorizing the names of lines, sails, knots, so worried about drowning, getting lost at sea, so unsettled about rogue waves, sharks and wet bottoms.

I never noticed the beautiful sunsets, the gentle rocking of the boat, the swallows touching the water surface, the salt water droplets on my face.  Now I do.

I look into John’s eyes and I finally can read them, they tell me all, they tell me “Trust me”, and I smile.

Nortada 43 Power Cruiser Design 14

This appears to be the first Sparkman & Stephens powerboat launched (although design #3 was a powerboat design, it was not built). The year was 1931. She was heavily built by one William Bunce of Huntington, Long Island. She was powered by twin 4 cylinder engines of 56hp each for a cruising speed of 10 knots.

The general arrangement looks quite practical for a 43 boat with a cabin including en-suite head on each end of the boat separated by the engine room/wheelhouse for reasonable privacy for two couples.

The hull lines look definitively influenced by sailing yacht design. There was 5,000 lbs of ballast integral to the skeg.

Back in the Wild West

I have left it too long to get back out to the west of the country.  I had a job on in Camarthern Friday so it wasnt to much of a drive before I was parked up along side Taran at St Brides Haven.  The forecast for the weekend wasnt looking promising however, between force 4-6 with gusts and a 3m swell with spring tides.
We were up for an early start, playing it safe we though we would stay in St Brides Bay aiming to go from Solva back to St Brides Haven.  taran had a quick roll to get him in the mood.
I should probably explain that thing on my head.  It seems bandanas are the fashion with a few kayakers, so I dug out this old Bonjovi one I had from my first ever gig year and years ago.  Even though it makes me look like a complete arse and would probably be fitting with an eye patch, it works.
We head out of a calm flat bay wondering what lay around the corner of the natural harbour.
We approached Black Rock marking the entrance to Solva harbour seeing that the conditions looked quite big.
A big wave approaches almost completely submerging Black Rock.  It was quite comical we both just turned around...I dont think so.  My VHF has had enough use a couple of weeks ago.
We drive by Broad Haven shortening the trip, maybe we could punch though the surf.  It never looks that big until you sit on the floor!
Looking at some of those waves we decide to play it safe again.  Even if we did manage to punch through the breakers there would be no coming back if it turns out rough on the other side.  We could both do with the surf practise anyway.

Some cracking pictures, thanks Taran.
Packing up the vans in the car park I meet Marcus who has commented on my blog previously and been meaning to join us for a paddle locally.  A convoy of cars with kayaks then passes by, I wounder where theyre heading.
We drive back to St Brides Bay for a third attempt of making something of the day where we catch up with Bath Canoe Club and Sea Kayak Guides who are based in St Davids.  They kindly offered us to join them for a night on Skomer.  We decided to join them but paddle back later.
Punching though the surf at St Brides Haven I take a big wave just as it breaks full force in the chest...ouch! timed that one wrong.  The swell was pretty impressive out of the bay sending clouds of spray up as it crashed into the red sandstone cliffs.
It was a nice experience being surrounded by another 14 paddlers, some nice boats too.
That was until someone recognised Mayday Stuart.  Not bad twice in one day.

Approaching Musselwick Sands the conditions turned perfect.  I was a bit anxious about landing in the surf with an audience, although it seems I wasnt the only one as a few tumbled over.
I managed to pull it off, best landing yet!

Carrying on our trip hugging the cliffs looking out for every rock hopping opportunity.
The wind picked up as we rounded Wooltack Point crossing over Jack Sound.  The tide had just about turned, I couldnt help thinking what it would be like in half hour or so after it had time to pick up momentum.

The first rafts of Puffins were soon spotted once we were over the sound.  No chance of getting close though with a convoy of 15 paddlers.
We paddled into North Haven, the sounds of seals basking on the rocks signaling our arrival.
A few curious heads pop up to investigate.
We land on the beach for a quick break and exchange thanks and farewells.  Would anyone notice if I just slid off with the Alaw Bach parked up next to my boat?  Boat envy is a terrible thing, Ill get one some day.

We were followed from North Haven almost all the way back by a couple of playful seals trying to touch the sterns of our boats.  I finally managed to snap a shot at one as she surfaced.  Mid crossing we spotted some fins in the distance, a pod of three or four porpoises maybe.  Then another just ahead.  I reach for the camera and it popped up alongside my boat within reaching distance.  Amazing, and unusual for a Porpoise to get so close.
Its still a little lumpy as we cross straight over to St Brides Haven but the swell was nothing that it was earlier.  A few Gannets fly overhead but no good shots unfortunately.

We land and dry our kit in the last of the days sun, Taran cooks up some nice jacket potatoes in his van for dinner.  A slow start to the day but couldnt have asked for ending.  Thanks again to Bath Canoe Club and Sea Kayak Tours for letting us tag along for a great adventure.
