More on Hughes 38 Design 1903

We posted an article earlier about the Hughes 38, design, #1903. Trying to follow the history of this design and the other Hughes models generally leads to confusion for many owners.

Heres a little history:
Hughes Boat Works of Canada was one of the largest production boatbuilders for a number of years in the 1970s. And yes it is true that the company was started by the Howard Hughes (no relation to the famous aviator) and his brother Peter. Initially the brothers designed their own products which ranged from small dinghies to smaller sailing yachts up to around 29 length overall. Once they ventured into the larger sized boats they enlisted the help of the firm and from that a handful of models were produced as follows:

Design #1903, Northstar 38, also known as Hughes 38 and the subject of this article
Design #1956, Hughes 48
Design #2098-C6, Northstar 1000
Design #2134, Northstar 80/20
Design #2135, Northstar 500, also know as Northstar 25
Design #2135-C3, Northstar 600, also known as Northstar 26 and Hughes 26
Design #2166, Northstar 35, also known as Hughes 35

The confusion lies in all of the name changes. As we have mentioned in previous postings, in 1969 Hughes Boat Works Ltd was sold to US Steel. Both Hughes brothers stayed with the company until 1971, when US Steel changed the name of the company to Northstar Yachts Ltd. Then in 1977 Howard Hughes purchased Northstar back again and renamed it Hughes Boatworks, Inc, a close variation of the original name. It was then that the names changed for example the Northstar 600 became the H26.

Note the deckhouse was changed significantly: the small step was eliminated in the house top and the windows were reconfigured. The layout was also changed as can be seen in the brochure shown below.

Starting Them Young

The sea has been like a pond in the evenings lately so I figured I could get away with squeezing my 4 year old son Zakk on my lap and take him out on the water.

All kitted out and ready to go.

There was plenty of room for Zakk to squeeze in between my knees.

We got out from the shore looking down the Bristol Channel with the sun settling down in the West when Zakk said "this is brilliant".

I couldnt pack up without giving Connor a go, but this wasnt going to be as simple. We were packed into the cockpit so tight I dont think we would have got out if we had gone over, which made me a little nervous.

Connor loved it as well and it was a task getting either of them out. Zakk had to have another go just so he could have one over on his big brother.

They want their own boats now. It would be great if one day they can look back on these pictures and say thats where it all started.

Jewel of Muscat Sets Sail

Jewel of Muscat, a replica of a 9th century sewn-plank dhow, has begun its planned 3,000-mile voyage from Oman to Singapore by way of India, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia. Jewels website provides the details (including plenty of photos, illustrations, and videos), and one of our previous posts explains the archaeological find upon which the vessel is based: a shipwreck of what was evidently a trading voyage between the Persian Gulf and China, discovered in Indonesian waters.

Jewel is 18 meters LOA, and her rig consists of two square-rigged masts, set up ketch-fashion. The photo, from Jewels website, shows her being towed from the harbor in Port Sultan Qaboos, Oman, accompanied by a fleet of well-wishers and celebratory fireboat plumes. (The schooner-like appearance of the rig is merely a trick of the camera angle -- the forward mast is indeed the taller of the two.)

Coamings Installed

Finally I have installed the coamings and I declare to quite pleased with the result!

If you look closely you can see where I re-modeled the plank of 10" sapele so that I could get the deck curve out of the smaller stock - otherwise I would have needed a 14" wide board. Even though you can see the different wood grain, the fact that both sides are symmetrical makes it quite attractive - at least to my eyes.

Once I had both side of the coamings laminated, I decided to glue both on at the same time so that I could adjust each coaming where they join at the front and ensure a symmetric fit.

Here you can see where I had jammed two lenghts of 2x1 on top of each coaming close to the front join up to the workshop ceiling in order to give me sufficient downward pressure.

I also re-purposed the clamping cauls which JohnB describes in his instructions for the fore deck. I clamped these sideways at the front of each coaming and then placed a further clamp on them to pull the coamings together at the joint. It seemed to work fine and allowed for finer adjustments during the final glue-up.

Its a lot of clamps but it worked out fine in the end.

Design 2161 C1 Avante II

This aluminum motoryacht was designed for the Netherlands-American Yacht Company of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, now defunct. She was built by Stephens Marine of Stockton, California and launched in 1974.

Power is derived from twin Cummings VT12-800-M diesels generating 750hp each for a top speed of 22 knots.

Design 2025 Palmer Johnson 40

We have already discussed the Swan 40 which bears the same design number #2025. So what is this boat versus the Swan (hint: its the very same boat)? Heres how it came to be: In the late 1960s the boatbuilder, Palmer Johnson of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, established a brokerage division with representatives around the Unites States: New York, Chicago and Newport Beach, California, and a representative in Hants, England. Their strategy was to market a number of fiberglass sailboats under their name but built by various builders, primarily in Europe.

The PJ40 is just such a boat. The boats were in fact built by Nautor Swan and sold by PJ under their name. Eventually Nautor decided that it was no longer in their best interest to have their yachts sold through Palmer Johnson, and returned to the practice of exclusively selling the boats under their own name.

A Perfect Hang Over Cure

This weekend I was up north in Liverpool for my friends stag weekend and like many obsessed kayakers I was on the lookout for a paddling opportunity.

It doesnt take a rocket scientist to guess what was on the back of my t-shirt...they later wished they had put Uncle Albert from Only Fools and Horses.

After two days on the booze it was going to take more than a fatty cooked breakfast to cure my hangover. Mike had very kindly offered to let me take his Tootega out and join him and a few other from Liverpool Canoe Club for a paddle around the marina.

After 5 hours sleep and a sharp coffee I managed to get myself up and down the marina for 10am. Mike built this boat from cedar strips and is absolutely stunning. Making me get rather excited about my build.

My first impressions was how the feel of the boat was no different to a composite boat if not better. It felt very strong, ridged and safe (apparently it is more rigged than Mikes Rockpool) and a very smooth finish.

For me it handled really well, turning with little effort. Although after looking at the photos it seems my skinny little butt may have had an effect as the boat is too high in the water and the stern is out of the water. It was fast and edged well too.

The rain didnt manage to stay off as we had a good soaking on the way back.

I met my friends back at Albert Docks for a quick bite to eat before our long trek home. It was like tall ship heaven here I just wished I had made the effort to come down earlier in the holiday. What a perfect way to end a great weekend. Thanks Mike.

Night Paddling

The sun sets on a beautiful sunny day and me and Taran take to the water at Sully. A little apprehensive about tonights paddle but a paddle in the dark is something Ive been meaning to do for a long while. Ive been out on Cardiff Bay in the dark and ended or begun a few trips in the twilight.

Leaving Sully causeway we paddle out to Lavernock Outfall Buoy blinking in the distance. There was a bit of swell running through and it was a strange feeling manoeuvring in the dark.

We then head on to the lights along the shore to Penarth.

It seemed to take forever to reach Penarth, however we must have been making great progress surfing in the dark. Surfing in the dark was great, it felt like we were flying along on the backs of the waves offshore.

Finally the lights come closer and we paddle under the pier. The orange glow of Cardiff helped light the way in a moonless sky. I couldnt help peering back to the dark shadows of Lavernock Point wondering what surprises lurk in the dark for us later. We land just beyond the pier for a break before venturing back, deeper in to the dark.

Approaching Lavernock Point, notorious for kicking up a storm, the darkness denies us the judgement of the conditions. The sounds of running tides is amplified and dark shapes start to appear. Thankfully we passed over with little more than a few small waves and a bit of chop. It then a straight forward paddle on to Sully, where Taran has a play on the causeway. A very successful and enjoyable first night paddle out on the ocean waves.
